An Orchestral Player’s Perspective on the Full Concert Model Flute: A Conversation with Julia Bogorad-Kogan

by Jeremy McEntire
“I  just want to tell him thank you.  He changed my career!” Julia Bogorad-Kogan exclaimed.  She had approached the Nagahara Flutes booth at a recent convention looking to speak to Kanichi Nagahara.
Nagahara Full Concert Model:
Completing the Boehm Tradition
...Until the middle of the 20th Century, when recording industry stars began to emerge, the flute was recognized primarily as an instrument to provide color in orchestral and chamber settings. Even though the Boehm-system flute released in 1847 allowed greater projection and intonation over its conical-bore predecessor, limitations continued to exist with the instrument.

Enhanced Flute Practice (With a Piccolo!)
A revolutionary new design. A new milestone in the history of the flute!
The Nagahara Mini is designed with a cylindrical bore, meant to more closely parallel the acoustic construction of the flute. This results in an instrument that serves as an extension of the flute in terms of range and tone quality.

The Nagahara MINI Flute

The Nagahara MINI Flute:
A piccolo in the true Boehm tradition
...The Nagahara Mini features a body with a cylindrical bore and a tapered headjoint - a miniature flute! Because the diameter of the tube remains the same through the entire body, the length of the tube can be extended by up to three toneholes to allow for a low B, three half-steps below the lowest note of the conventional piccolo.
The Nagahara C# Mechanism:
Continuing The Boehm Tradition
...ln keeping with its continual commitment to innovation and the evolution of the flute, Nagahara Flutes has developed a new C# mechanism (U.S. patent 9,257,105) that solves the tonehole dilemma.
